What is the difference between a burkini and a regular swimsuit?

A burkini is swimwear that covers the body and hair, usually in three pieces: a long tunic, trousers and a hood. A regular swimsuit leaves the arms and legs bare. Both use swim fabrics, but the burkini combines full coverage with freedom of movement in the water.

What a burkini is made of

The most common form has three pieces: a long-sleeved tunic reaching mid-thigh or lower, long trousers, and a hood sewn from the same fabric. Some models add a light skirt over the trousers. The ZAÏA “Oasis” set follows this composition with a relaxed cut.

Coverage versus movement

People often assume that covering up means being heavy and slow in the water. That is only true with the wrong fabric. Technical swim fabrics are light and repel water, so you can genuinely swim in a burkini rather than just wade into the sea.

Is it allowed in pools?

A burkini uses the same family of fabrics as ordinary swimsuits, and it is accepted in most pools that require dedicated swimwear. The practical rule: fabric made for swimming is fine, everyday cotton clothing is not.

Who is it for?

Any woman who wants to swim fully covered: for religious reasons, for sun protection, or simply to feel comfortable and private at the beach. UV50+ protection also makes it a practical choice for long hours in the sun.
